Wat Mahathat was started in 1374 and was the most significant temple in the ancient city. It housed relics of Buddha and was not only considered the religious center but also the center of the universe. Nobody knows how this head got entangled by this tree during the period when the temple was destroyed and abandoned. It is now one of the most photographed objects in Ayuthaya.
